The Service

Free Scrap Car Collection Across the UK We Come to You

Scrap car collection is a free service where a licensed vehicle recycler picks up your old, damaged, or unwanted car directly from your driveway, workplace, or garage – anywhere in the UK. At Scrap a Vehicle, we arrange same-day or next-day collection through our network of Authorised Treatment Facilities, and you get paid by bank transfer the moment your car is loaded onto the truck.
No dragging it to a scrapyard yourself. No worrying about expired MOT or road tax. No hidden fees. We turn up, we pay you, we sort every bit of paperwork – including your DVLA notification and Certificate of Destruction.

Is Scrap Car Collection Really Free?

Yes. Properly free. Not “free but we’ll knock fifty quid off your quote for fuel costs” free. Genuinely, completely free.

At Scrap a Vehicle, collection is included as standard with every quote. We don’t charge for pickup, we don’t charge admin fees, and we don’t charge for paperwork. The amount we quote you is the amount you receive – nothing gets deducted.

If any scrap car company tries to charge you for collection, that’s a red flag. Legitimate Authorised Treatment Facilities absorb collection costs because the value they recover from recycling your vehicle – the steel, aluminium, copper, and precious metals in the catalytic converter – more than covers the transport. Anyone charging for pickup is either unlicensed or trying to squeeze extra margin out of you.

What Vehicles Can Be Collected for Scrap?

Pretty much anything with four wheels and an engine. Or even without an engine, if we’re being honest. Our collection service covers:

MOT failures

failed its test and not worth the repair bill? We’ll collect it regardless

Insurance write-offs

Cat S, Cat N, Cat B – we handle all categories

Imported vehicles

left-hand drive, grey imports, or vehicles without UK registration

Vehicles without keys

lost the keys? We’ve got equipment to handle that

Cars in any condition

running, non-running, accident damaged, fire damaged, flood damaged, vandalised, or just plain old and tired

SORN vehicles

declared off-road and sitting on your driveway? No problem. No tax or insurance needed for us to collect

Vans and light commercial vehicles

Transit, Sprinter, Vivaro – whatever you’ve got

The only thing we can’t collect is a vehicle you don’t own. You’ll need to prove ownership – usually through the V5C logbook, though there are alternatives if you’ve lost it. We’ve got a detailed guide on scrapping a car without a V5 that covers all the options.

Can I Get Same-Day Scrap Car Collection?

In most parts of the UK, yes. Same-day collection depends on driver availability in your area, but we manage it more often than not. If you call before midday, there’s a strong chance we can have someone at your door that afternoon.

Next-day collection is almost always available. And if you’re flexible on timing – say, any morning this week – we can usually find a slot that works within 24 to 48 hours.

Here’s the thing most people don’t realise: your car doesn’t need to be roadworthy for us to collect it. No MOT? No tax? No insurance? Flat tyres? Dead battery? Doesn’t matter. Our recovery vehicles are equipped to load non-runners, so we can pick up your car even if it hasn’t moved in years. We’ve collected cars from overgrown gardens, underground car parks, and narrow country lanes – we’ll figure it out.

What Do I Need Ready for Collection Day?

Not much, honestly. But having a few things sorted beforehand makes the whole process quicker for both of us

All sets of keys

Hand over every key you’ve got. If the car still runs, leave it accessible so the driver can load it easily.

Clear access

Make sure the driver can actually get to your vehicle. If it’s in a tight spot, let us know when you book so we can send the right size truck.

Your V5C logbook (registration document)

This is the main one. The driver will need Section 9 of the V5C, which you sign and hand over. If you’ve lost it, don’t panic – you can still scrap your car. You’ll just need to write to the DVLA separately to let them know.

Photo ID

A driving licence or passport. This is a legal requirement under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 – no legitimate scrap service can skip this step. If someone offers to collect your car without asking for ID, walk away.

Remove your personal belongings

Give the car a proper check – glove box, boot, under the seats, sun visors. You’d be amazed what people leave behind. Once the car’s on the truck, getting your stuff back becomes a real headache.

How Much Will I Get Paid for My Scrap Car?

Every car is different, so there’s no single answer. But to give you a rough idea, most scrap cars in the UK fetch between £150 and £500 in 2026.
The main factors that affect your price:

Vehicle weight

heavier cars contain more recyclable metal. A Range Rover will always be worth more than a Corsa, purely on weight alone

Catalytic converter

this single component can account for £30 to £200+ of your car’s scrap value, because it contains platinum, palladium, and rhodium

Make and model

some cars have parts that are in high demand on the second-hand market, which pushes the price up

Current metal prices

steel, aluminium, and copper prices fluctuate daily on the global market. When metal prices are up, scrap values follow

Condition

a car that still runs is usually worth more because it can be sold as salvage rather than pure scrap

Your location

the closer you are to a processing facility, the less it costs to collect you, which can mean a slightly better offer

How Does Scrap Car Collection Actually Work?

Honestly, it’s one of those things that sounds like it should be complicated but really isn’t. The whole process – from getting a quote to watching your old motor disappear on a flatbed – takes about 10 minutes of your actual time. Here’s how we do it:

01

You get a quote

Pop your registration number and postcode into our online tool. Takes about 30 seconds. We’ll show you exactly what your car is worth based on its weight, condition, catalytic converter, and current scrap metal prices. The price you see is the price you get – guaranteed.

02

You pick a collection slot

Happy with the offer? Choose a date and time that works for you. We collect Monday through Saturday, and in most areas we can arrange same-day or next-day pickup. We’ll confirm everything by text and email so there’s no back-and-forth.

03

We collect and pay you on the spot

Our driver arrives at your door with a flatbed or recovery truck. Quick inspection to confirm the vehicle matches what you described, your photo ID gets checked, and the money hits your bank account via BACS transfer while you’re still standing there. The whole thing is done in about 15 minutes.

04

We handle everything else

Your car goes straight to a licensed ATF where it’s depolluted and recycled. We notify the DVLA on your behalf, and your Certificate of Destruction arrives within a few days. You don’t lift another finger.

That’s it. Four steps. Most people say they wish they’d done it sooner instead of letting the thing sit on the drive for six months.

Do I Need to Tell the DVLA I’ve Scrapped My Car?

Yes – but we do it for you.

When you scrap a car in the UK, the DVLA must be notified so they can update their records and cancel your vehicle’s registration. If you don’t do this, you could end up with fines for a car you no longer own. That’s nobody’s idea of fun.

Here’s how we handle it: our ATF partner completes the DVLA notification as part of the scrapping process. They’ll use Section 9 of your V5C logbook, which you hand over on collection day. You’ll also receive a Certificate of Destruction – this is your legal proof that the vehicle has been properly deregistered and recycled through a licensed facility.

If your car is taxed, you’re entitled to a refund on any full remaining months of road tax. The DVLA sorts this automatically once they process the notification – the refund lands in your account within a few weeks.

For the full step-by-step process, have a look at our DVLA guide to scrapping a car.

What Happens to My Car After Collection?

Your car goes to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility – an ATF – where it’s processed in line with UK environmental law. Here’s the short version of what happens next:

Depollution comes first

All hazardous materials are removed – fuel, oil, brake fluid, coolant, battery acid, air conditioning gas. This stops anything nasty leaching into the ground or water supply. It’s a legal requirement under the End of Life Vehicle Directive, and every ATF must follow it.

Then the car is stripped for reusable parts

Anything that still works – engine, gearbox, alternator, headlights, body panels – gets tested and sold as second-hand parts. This gives the car’s components a second life and keeps perfectly good parts out of landfill.

Finally, the shell is crushed and recycled

The remaining metal goes through a shredder and gets separated into ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Steel gets melted down and turned into new products. Modern ATFs recover over 95% of all materials from every vehicle they process.

You can read more about the full recycling process on our sustainability page, including how vehicle scrapping contributes to the UK’s circular economy targets.

Why Choose Scrap a Vehicle for Your Collection?

Look, there are dozens of scrap car services out there. So why us? Fair question.

Licensed ATF partners only

Every vehicle we collect goes to an Environment Agency-approved Authorised Treatment Facility. That means legal compliance, proper depollution, and a genuine Certificate of Destruction. No dodgy backyard operations.

Guaranteed prices

The quote we give you online is the price you get paid. We don’t play games with last-minute deductions or “oh, we didn’t realise the condition was this bad” nonsense. If the car matches your description, the price stands.

Same-day payment

Bank transfer on collection. Not a cheque that takes a week to clear. Not cash (which is illegal under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, by the way). Proper, traceable, instant bank transfer.

We actually care about the environment

This isn’t greenwashing. Our ATF network recovers 95%+ of all vehicle materials, and we’re transparent about how and where your car is processed. Read more on our sustainability page.

UK-wide coverage

From the Highlands of Scotland to Cornwall, we’ve got collection partners everywhere. Check your nearest area on our locations page.

All paperwork handled

DVLA notification, Certificate of Destruction, tax refund – we sort the lot. You walk away clean.

Where Do You Collect Scrap Cars in the UK?

Everywhere. Genuinely. We operate a nationwide scrap car collection service covering every region of the UK:

England

London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, Bristol, Newcastle, Nottingham, Leicester, Southampton, Brighton, and every city, town, and village in between.

Scotland

Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness, and across the Highlands and Islands.

Wales

Cardiff, Swansea, Newport, Wrexham, and throughout North and South Wales.

Northern Ireland

Belfast, Derry, Lisburn, Newry, and across all six counties.

Even if you’re in a rural area, we’ll reach you. Some of our most memorable collections have been down single-track lanes, on remote farms, and from island addresses. If a recovery truck can physically get to your car, we’ll collect it. Browse our full list of collection areas to find your nearest partner.

How long does scrap car collection take?

The actual collection takes about 15 minutes. Our driver arrives, checks your ID and the vehicle, completes a quick inspection, loads the car, and makes payment via bank transfer. Most customers say the whole thing is over before they’ve finished their cuppa.

Can you collect a car that doesn’t start or has no wheels?

Absolutely. Our recovery trucks carry winches and ramps specifically for non-runners, cars on flat tyres, and vehicles with missing wheels. We collect cars in all conditions – if it exists, we can move it.

Do I need MOT, tax, or insurance for my car to be collected?

No. Your car doesn’t need any of these for collection. Since our driver brings a flatbed or recovery vehicle, your car never touches the public road under its own power. It can be completely unroadworthy.

What payment methods do you use?

Bank transfer only. Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, it is illegal for any scrap dealer in the UK to pay cash for vehicles. We make same-day BACS transfers, and most customers see the funds within hours.

Will I get a Certificate of Destruction?

Yes, always. A Certificate of Destruction is issued by the ATF once your vehicle has been processed. It’s your legal proof that the car has been properly scrapped and deregistered with the DVLA. We send it to you within 7 days of collection.

Can I scrap a car that’s on finance?

Not directly – you need to own the vehicle outright. If there’s outstanding finance, you’d need to settle the balance with your finance provider first. Once it’s paid off and the finance is cleared, we can collect and scrap it as normal.

What if I’ve lost my V5C logbook?

You can still scrap your car without a V5C. You’ll need to provide photo ID and proof of address, and we’ll guide you through writing to the DVLA to let them know the vehicle has been scrapped. Our team handles this regularly, so it’s nothing we haven’t dealt with before.

Is there a minimum value for collection?

We collect vehicles of all values. Even if your car is only worth the minimum scrap price, collection is still free. We never charge for pickup regardless of the vehicle’s value.
