Quick Answer

How much is a Kia worth for scrap in 2026?

A Kia Picanto is worth GBP 90 to GBP 205 for scrap. A Kia cee’d is worth GBP 120 to GBP 260 for scrap. A Kia Sportage is worth GBP 155 to GBP 340 for scrap. A Kia EV6 is worth GBP 230 to GBP 500 for scrap (battery owned). Kia scrap values are calculated primarily on vehicle weight. The Picanto is the most scrapped Kia in the UK at 21% of all Kia scraps, followed by the cee’d at 19% and the Sportage at 17%. ScrapCarComparison data indicates Kia has average reliability: most scrapped years are 2006, 2009, and 2005 — meaning Kias reach scrap at approximately 17 years old, at the UK average. Important note: the D4FE 1.6 CRDi MHEV engine fitted to the Kia Sportage from 2018 has a documented crankshaft pulley locking pin failure mode that causes catastrophic engine seizure, sometimes at fewer than 40,000 miles. This is the primary mechanical reason 2018-2021 Sportages reach end-of-life earlier than the model’s history would suggest.
Kia is the UK’s second-largest Korean car brand, sold under the Hyundai Motor Group alongside its sister brand Hyundai. The Picanto, Rio, cee’d, Sportage, and Sorento are the highest-volume models. Kia is distinguished in the UK market by its 7-year manufacturer warranty — the longest standard new car warranty of any mainstream manufacturer. The primary scrap triggers for Kia are the D4FE 1.6 CRDi MHEV crankshaft pulley failure on Sportage models from 2018, the shared DPF and EGR fault pattern on diesel cee’d and Sportage models used for urban journeys, and the G3LA/G4LA Kappa engine timing chain wear on the Picanto. The Kia EV6, EV9, and Niro EV require specialist high-voltage battery depollution at ATF.

Why Do Kia Owners Scrap Their Cars?

Kias are scrapped most often due to: D4FE 1.6 CRDi MHEV crankshaft pulley locking pin failure causing catastrophic engine seizure (Recall 200S33 — MHSG tensioner replacement and crankshaft sprocket bolt tightening torque increase) on Sportage models from 2018; DPF blockage and EGR valve carbon deposits on diesel cee’d, Sportage, and Sorento models used primarily for urban journeys; G3LA/G4LA Kappa engine timing chain wear and VVT fault codes P0011/P0014 on the Picanto; and accumulated age-related faults on high-mileage first and second-generation cee’d models. ScrapCarComparison data indicates Kia has average reliability: most scrapped years are 2006, 2009, and 2005, meaning cars reach scrap at around 17 years — at the UK average of 17 years and 3 months.

Kia Sportage D4FE 1.6 CRDi MHEV

Crankshaft Pulley Locking Pin Failure -- Recall 200S33

The Kia Sportage Mk4 (2016-2021) and Mk4 facelift fitted with the 1.6 CRDi mild-hybrid (MHEV) diesel engine carry engine code D4FE. The D4FE is a Hyundai Motor Group engine shared with the Hyundai Tucson 1.6 CRDi MHEV of the same generation. It is the successor to the D4FB used in the earlier Sportage and Hyundai i30. The D4FE MHEV adds a 48-volt mild-hybrid system (MHSG — Motor Generator) to the base diesel unit.
The D4FE has a critical design weakness in its crankshaft pulley assembly. The crankshaft pulley is secured to the end of the crankshaft by a small locking pin rather than the more robust Woodruff key used in most comparable engines. This pin is inherently weak. The mild-hybrid MHEV system adds significant additional load to the bottom pulley assembly — the MHSG motor is heavier than the standard alternator it replaces and places additional rotational stress on the locking pin at every motor-assist event. This combination of design weakness and increased load leads to the locking pin shearing. When the locking pin fails, the crankshaft pulley spins independently of the crankshaft. The timing belt immediately loses tension and the engine’s timing system fails. In most cases the pistons strike the open valves, bending them. The result is catastrophic internal engine damage requiring either a complete engine rebuild or engine replacement. Owners have reported complete engine seizure at as few as 38,000 miles on 2021-registered D4FE Sportages.
Kia issued Recall 200S33 (titled: MHSG Tensioner Replacement and Crankshaft Sprocket Bolt Tightening Torque Increase) to address the issue. The recall specification increased the tightening torque on the crankshaft sprocket bolt and replaced the MHSG tensioner with a revised part. However, field reports indicate that even after the recall, some engines have continued to fail, particularly those that were not brought in for the recall promptly. Engine replacement on the D4FE costs GBP 3,500 to GBP 6,000 at a Kia main dealer. On a 2018-2020 Sportage outside the 7-year warranty window, this repair is entirely uneconomic and scrapping or salvage becomes the rational outcome.
The D4FE also shares the DPF oil dilution risk of the D4FB family: interrupted DPF regeneration allows unburned diesel fuel to enter the oil sump via the cylinder walls, raising the oil level and potentially accelerating bearing wear. This compounds the crankshaft pulley failure risk. A D4FE Sportage with both the oil dilution and the crankshaft pulley fault active simultaneously is almost certainly beyond economic repair.

Kia cee'd and Sportage Diesel

DPF Fault P2002 and EGR Carbon Deposits -- Shared D4FB and D4FE Pattern

The Kia cee’d Mk1 (2006-2012) and Mk2 (2012-2018) fitted with the 1.6 CRDi diesel carry engine code D4FB — the same unit used in the Hyundai i30 of the same generation. The cee’d 1.6 CRDi shares the i30’s documented DPF and EGR fault pattern: urban short-journey use prevents passive DPF regeneration, generating fault code P2002 (Diesel Particulate Filter Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1), and the EGR valve develops accelerated carbon deposits causing rough idle, reduced power, and P0401 (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected) on higher-mileage examples.
The Kia Sportage Mk3 (2010-2015) fitted with the 1.7 CRDi and 2.0 CRDi diesels also shows DPF and EGR fault patterns consistent with the broader Hyundai Motor Group diesel architecture. The Sportage Mk3 1.7 CRDi DPF regeneration cycle begins when soot load reaches approximately 13-15 grams, completing over 10-15 miles at sustained load. Interrupting the regeneration cycle — by switching off the engine mid-cycle — causes soot to accumulate faster in subsequent cycles and accelerates blockage.
For the cee’d Mk2 1.6 CRDi specifically: DPF cleaning costs GBP 120 to GBP 300; DPF replacement costs GBP 600 to GBP 1,200; EGR valve clean or replacement costs GBP 200 to GBP 500. On a cee’d Mk2 with more than 100,000 miles and both faults combined with age-related suspension and electrical wear, the total repair cost frequently exceeds the vehicle’s value.

Kia Picanto

G3LA/G4LA Kappa Engine Timing Chain and P0011/P0014 VVT Faults

The Kia Picanto Mk1 (2004-2011) and Mk2 (2011-2017) are fitted with the Kappa petrol engine family in the UK. The 1.0-litre unit carries engine code G3LA. The 1.2-litre unit carries engine code G4LA. These are the same Kappa engine codes used in the Hyundai i10 of the same generation — the Picanto and i10 share the same Hyundai Motor Group small-car engine platform.
The Kappa timing chain is susceptible to wear when engine oil changes are infrequent. The chain tensioner requires consistent oil pressure from clean oil to maintain correct tension. Sludge and oil degradation reduce tensioner pressure, allowing the chain to slacken. The cold-start rattle symptom (10-20 seconds on a cold engine, disappearing as oil pressure builds) is characteristic of Kappa chain wear. When the chain stretches sufficiently, the VVT system becomes unreliable and the ECU logs P0011 (Camshaft Position A Over-Advanced or System Performance, Bank 1) and P0014 (Camshaft Position B Over-Advanced or System Performance, Bank 1). Chain replacement costs GBP 500 to GBP 900.
The Picanto is the most scrapped Kia in the UK at 21% of all Kia scraps (ScrapCarComparison). This high share reflects the Picanto’s role as a first car for young drivers — usage patterns that combine infrequent servicing, short urban journeys, and high stop-start mileage, all of which accelerate Kappa timing chain and Sportage DPF wear patterns respectively.

Kia 7-Year Warranty

What It Means When Scrapping

Kia’s industry-leading 7-year / 100,000-mile manufacturer warranty (introduced in the UK in 2010) is a significant element of the Kia brand proposition. For scrapping, the 7-year warranty creates a specific scenario: a Kia registered from 2017 onwards is potentially still within its manufacturer warranty window in 2026. If the D4FE crankshaft pulley failure occurs within the warranty period and Kia has been notified, Kia may cover engine replacement costs under warranty — making scrapping unnecessary.
Before scrapping a 2017-2023 registered Kia Sportage with a D4FE engine failure, check the warranty status. The 7-year warranty runs from the date of first registration, not the date of purchase by the current keeper. If the car is within 7 years of first registration and the engine failure is not caused by missed services or a non-Kia modification, contact Kia UK directly before booking a scrap collection. The warranty covers the original owner and transfers to subsequent private owners within the warranty period. Engine replacement under warranty transforms an otherwise uneconomic repair into a zero-cost fix.

Kia Scrap and Salvage Prices by Model

Updated: February 2026

Kia scrap values range from GBP 90 for a Picanto to GBP 500 for an EV6 (battery owned) in early 2026. The Picanto is the lightest and lowest scrap value Kia. Heavier models including the Sorento, Stinger, and EV6/EV9 return stronger weight-based scrap prices. The Kia Stinger and cee’d/ProCeed GT should never be offered for straight scrap — strong performance salvage demand.

Should You Scrap Your Kia or Sell It for Salvage?

Updated: February 2026

Scrap a Kia when the D4FE engine has seized from crankshaft pulley failure (pistons have struck valves — full engine failure), when the D4FB engine has oil dilution damage from repeated interrupted DPF regeneration, or when accident damage is Category B. Sell for salvage when the engine runs — even a Sportage with D4FE crankshaft pulley failure may be worth more as a salvage write-off than as scrap if the body and interior are intact. Always check the 7-year warranty before scrapping a 2017-2023 Kia. Never scrap a Stinger, cee’d GT, ProCeed GT, or EV6 GT unless Category B.

Scrap is the right choice when...

Salvage pays more when...

D4FE engine seized -- crankshaft pulley sheared, pistons struck valves, complete internal failure

D4FE Sportage with Recall 200S33 outstanding AND still within 7-year warranty -- repair may be at zero cost

D4FB cee'd with oil dilution from repeated DPF interruption plus bearing noise -- full engine damage

D4FB cee'd with P2002 DPF fault only (no oil dilution, engine running) -- DPF repair is economic

Category B insurance write-off (crush-only designation)

Any Sportage with intact body and interior -- D4FE engine replacement salvage route returns more than weight-based scrap

Picanto with failed Kappa timing chain (chain jumped, bent valves) plus structural rust

Picanto with P0011/P0014 VVT codes only (chain rattling but intact) -- timing chain replacement economic on younger Picanto

Fire or flood damage throughout vehicle

Any Stinger, cee'd GT, or ProCeed GT -- performance salvage demand always outperforms scrap value

Sorento with full drivetrain failure plus significant bodywork damage

Any EV6 or EV9 -- 800V battery value and parts demand makes salvage and insurance total-loss routes far superior to scrap

Market Insight:

Enter your reg. The system prices both scrap and salvage routes simultaneously. For D4FE Sportage owners: check the warranty status first by contacting Kia Customer Services on 03333 00 20 30 with your VIN before accepting either route — a valid warranty claim transforms a GBP 4,000-6,000 repair into a zero-cost fix.

Scrapping a Kia EV6, EV9, or Niro EV

Updated: February 2026

Kia EV6 and EV9 models use the E-GMP platform with an 800-volt ultra-fast charging architecture — the same platform as the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6. Both require high-voltage battery safe discharge and depollution at an 800V-capable ATF. The Kia Niro EV uses a 400-volt system. Unlike the Renault Zoe, there is no Kia EV battery lease complication — Kia sells its EV batteries as part of the vehicle. EV6 and EV9 models are almost always worth substantially more for salvage, insurance total loss, or battery second-life routes than for weight-based scrap.

Market Insight:

The Kia EV6 (2021-present) and EV9 (2023-present) are built on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), shared with Hyundai IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, and Genesis GV60. The 800-volt architecture enables ultra-rapid DC charging at up to 350 kW (EV6 GT-Line and GT) and vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability. For scrapping, the 800V system requires specialist safe-discharge equipment not present at all ATFs. Scrap a Vehicle routes EV6 and EV9 only to appropriately certified ATFs.
The Kia EV6 GT (2022-present) produces 576hp from a dual-motor 800V AWD configuration. This is a high-performance EV with very strong salvage demand — GT-specific powertrains, cooling systems, and Brembo brake components command significant prices on the specialist market. A damaged EV6 GT should always be assessed for salvage before any scrap route is considered.
The Kia Niro EV (2018-present) uses a 400-volt system with either a 39.2 kWh or 64 kWh battery pack. Standard EV ATF certification (400V safe discharge) is required. The Niro HEV (hybrid) and Niro PHEV (plug-in hybrid) also require appropriate hybrid battery depollution, though at lower voltages than the full EV variant. All three Niro powertrain variants are handled by Scrap a Vehicle’s EV-certified ATF network.

Scrap or Salvage?

Scrap a Kia when the 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt has failed, the 1.6 TDCi timing belt has snapped, or the car is a Category B write-off. Sell for salvage when the engine runs and the fault is mechanical, electrical, or cosmetic. Focus ST and Mustang models should always be assessed for salvage.

Important: Finance

If your Kia is subject to a hire purchase or PCP finance agreement, the finance company holds legal title. You cannot legally scrap or sell the vehicle until the outstanding finance is settled.

Kia Scrappage Scheme History and 2026 Status

No Kia scrappage scheme is currently active in 2026. The most recent Kia scrappage scheme ended on 30 June 2021. That scheme offered up to GBP 2,000 off a new Picanto, GBP 2,500 off a Stonic, and GBP 3,000 off a Niro, in exchange for scrapping a car registered before 30 June 2014 that had been owned for at least three months. No Kia scrappage scheme has been announced for 2026.

Kia’s scrappage scheme history in the UK includes a 2022 wave that offered GBP 1,500 off a Picanto or Rio, and GBP 2,000 off a Stonic, for cars registered before 31 March 2015. These later waves were dealer-supported schemes rather than Kia UK national campaigns, running across specific quarters. The SCC confirms the central scheme ended 30 June 2021.

Kia’s 7-year warranty is relevant to the scrappage question from a different angle: owners of Kias registered from 2019 onwards considering a new car should verify whether the 7-year warranty is still live before trading in or scrapping. A live warranty on a high-value model (Sportage, EV6, Sorento) may make a trade-in to a dealer significantly more attractive than scrapping, as the dealer absorbs the remaining warranty benefit.

Your Best Option

Legal Requirements When Scrapping a Kia in the UK

To legally scrap a Kia in the UK you must use an Authorised Treatment Facility licensed by the Environment Agency. Cash payments are prohibited under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013. Notify DVLA using Section 9 of the V5C or online at gov.uk. The ATF must issue a Certificate of Destruction within 7 days. For EV6, EV9, or Niro EV, the ATF must safely discharge and depollute the high-voltage battery — EV6 and EV9 require 800V-capable equipment. If your Kia has outstanding finance, the finance company holds legal title and the balance must be settled before scrapping.

Licensed ATF only

Only Authorised Treatment Facilities licensed by the Environment Agency can legally process an end-of-life Kia under the End of Life Vehicles Regulations 2003. Using an unlicensed buyer leaves you legally responsible for the vehicle and any environmental liability.

No cash payments

The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 bans cash payments for scrap vehicles in England, Scotland, and Wales. Payment must be by bank transfer or cheque. Any buyer offering cash is operating outside ATF licensing conditions.

Notify DVLA

Complete Section 9 of the V5C and post to DVLA, or notify online at gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle. Without notification you remain the registered keeper and are liable for road tax, ULEZ or CAZ charges, and any penalty notices issued after the vehicle leaves your possession.

Certificate of Destruction

The ATF must issue a CoD within 7 days. This is the official legal record that the Kia has been permanently destroyed and deregistered. Only the issuing ATF can reprint a lost CoD.

Road Tax Refund

Remaining full months of VED are automatically refunded by DVLA after deregistration. Payment is by cheque to your registered address within 4 to 6 weeks. Part months are not refunded.

EV6 / EV9 800V battery

E-GMP 800V architecture requires specialist safe-discharge equipment. Not all ATFs are certified for 800V high-voltage packs. Scrap a Vehicle uses only EV-certified ATFs appropriate to the specific battery voltage. Confirm EV certification before booking any EV6 or EV9 for collection.

7-year warranty check

If your Kia is within 7 years of first registration and the fault may be covered under manufacturer warranty, contact Kia UK (03333 00 20 30) before booking scrap collection. A valid warranty claim covering the D4FE engine failure could eliminate repair cost entirely, making scrapping unnecessary.

Outstanding finance

If your Kia is subject to outstanding PCP or HP finance, the finance company holds legal title. The settlement balance must be paid in full and confirmed in writing before you can legally scrap or sell the vehicle.

How to Scrap Your Kia

01

If 2017-2023 Kia with engine fault -- check 7-year warranty status first

For Kia Sportage 2018-2021 with D4FE engine failure: contact Kia UK on 03333 00 20 30 with your VIN before booking a scrap collection. If the car is within 7 years of first registration and the failure is not attributable to missed services, Kia may cover engine replacement under warranty. A valid warranty claim transforms a GBP 4,000-6,000 repair into zero cost. For all other Kias and for Kias confirmed out of warranty, proceed directly to Step 2.

02

Get your guaranteed quote in 30 seconds

Enter your Kia registration and postcode at scrapeavehicle.co.uk. The system retrieves DVLA data and simultaneously prices both scrap and salvage routes, returning the higher value. Scrap and salvage are priced independently -- a Sportage or Sorento with a failed engine will almost always return more for salvage than for scrap.

03

Book free collection -- same day or next day across most UK postcodes

Accept the quote and choose a collection slot. A flatbed recovery vehicle is dispatched. Your Kia does not need to start, drive, or have a current MOT. Non-runners, D4FE seized engines, DPF failures, and accident-damaged models are all collected on the same terms.

04

Receive payment by bank transfer on the same day -- DVLA notified automatically

Bank transfer is sent while the driver is on site. DVLA notification is submitted on your behalf. Certificate of Destruction arrives within 7 days. Remaining full VED months are automatically refunded by DVLA to your registered address. EV6/EV9/Niro EV: 800V or 400V ATF certification confirmed at booking.

How much is a Kia Picanto worth for scrap?

A Kia Picanto is worth GBP 90 to GBP 205 for scrap in early 2026. The Picanto is the most scrapped Kia in the UK at 21% of all Kia scraps. Its lightweight construction (830-1,060 kg depending on generation) limits its weight-based scrap value. The most common scrap trigger is the Kappa engine (G3LA 1.0 or G4LA 1.2) timing chain wear generating VVT fault codes P0011 and P0014, typically caused by infrequent oil changes. A running Picanto with only VVT codes and an intact timing chain will almost always return a higher price via the salvage route than via straight scrap.

What is the Kia Sportage D4FE engine fault and Recall 200S33?

The Kia Sportage Mk4 and Mk4 facelift (2018-2021) fitted with the 1.6 CRDi mild-hybrid diesel (engine code D4FE) has a documented crankshaft pulley locking pin failure. The crankshaft pulley is secured by a small pin rather than a robust Woodruff key. The 48-volt mild-hybrid MHSG motor adds additional rotational load to the pulley assembly, which causes the locking pin to shear. When the pin fails, the crankshaft pulley spins freely, the timing belt loses tension immediately, and the pistons strike the open valves -- causing complete and irreversible internal engine failure. Reports of complete seizure at fewer than 40,000 miles have been documented. Kia issued Recall 200S33 (MHSG Tensioner Replacement and Crankshaft Sprocket Bolt Tightening Torque Increase) to address the issue. Before scrapping a 2018-2021 Sportage with this failure, check whether Recall 200S33 has been applied and whether the 7-year warranty is still active.

What is the most scrapped Kia in the UK?

The Kia Picanto is the most scrapped Kia in the UK at 21% of all Kia scraps, followed by the cee'd at 19% and the Sportage at 17% (ScrapCarComparison data). Rio and cee'd are approximately tied at around 13% each according to ScrapCars-ForCash. Kia's most frequently scrapped registration years are 2006, 2009, and 2005, indicating average reliability compared to the UK average car parc scrap age of 17 years and 3 months.

Is there a Kia scrappage scheme in 2026?

No Kia scrappage scheme is currently active in 2026. The most recent Kia national scrappage scheme ended on 30 June 2021, offering up to GBP 2,000 off a Picanto, GBP 2,500 off a Stonic, and GBP 3,000 off a Niro for cars registered before 30 June 2014. A subsequent dealer-supported wave in 2022 offered GBP 1,500 off a Picanto or Rio and GBP 2,000 off a Stonic. No 2026 scheme has been announced. Location-based clean air zone schemes in London, Birmingham, and Scotland remain available to eligible Kia owners with non-compliant vehicles.

What does the Kia 7-year warranty mean if I want to scrap my car?

Kia's 7-year / 100,000-mile manufacturer warranty runs from the date of first registration and transfers to subsequent private owners within the warranty period. If your Kia is within 7 years of first registration and has a mechanical fault -- particularly a D4FE engine failure on a 2018-2021 Sportage -- the fault may be covered under the manufacturer warranty at zero cost to you. A valid warranty claim covering engine replacement transforms what would otherwise be an uneconomic repair into a zero-cost fix, potentially making scrapping unnecessary. Contact Kia UK on 03333 00 20 30 with your VIN before booking any scrap collection for a 2017-2023 registered Kia with a major mechanical fault.

Can I scrap a Kia EV6 or EV9?

Yes, but Kia EV6 and EV9 require scrapping at an ATF with 800V high-voltage battery safe-discharge certification. The E-GMP platform shared with Hyundai IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 uses an 800-volt architecture -- the highest operating voltage of any mainstream EV sold in the UK. Scrap a Vehicle routes EV6 and EV9 only to appropriately certified ATFs. Unlike the Renault Zoe, there is no Kia EV battery lease complication. However, EV6 and EV9 are almost always worth substantially more for salvage or insurance total loss than for weight-based scrap -- enter your reg and the system will price both routes automatically.

Should I scrap or sell a Kia Stinger?

Never straight-scrap a Kia Stinger unless it is a Category B insurance write-off with a crush-only designation. The Stinger (2017-present) is Kia's only rear-wheel drive performance saloon, available with the V6 3.3 T-GDi Lambda II engine (370hp GT-S) or 2.5 T-GDi Theta III (304hp). It has a consistent and active enthusiast following in the UK. Even a non-running Stinger has significant parts value: the rear-wheel drive platform, twin-turbo V6 engine assembly, and GT-S-specific Brembo brakes and limited-slip differential all command premium prices on the specialist market. A Stinger in any running condition should always be assessed for the salvage route first.
