Quick Answer

How much is a SEAT worth for scrap in 2026?

A SEAT Ibiza is worth GBP 130 to GBP 290 for scrap. A SEAT Leon is worth GBP 160 to GBP 360. A SEAT Ateca is worth GBP 230 to GBP 490. SEAT CUPRA performance models (Leon CUPRA, Ibiza CUPRA FR, Formentor VZ) are almost always worth more for salvage than scrap weight due to their enhanced drivetrain components and enthusiast demand. SEAT has been a member of the Volkswagen Group since 1986 — engines, transmissions, and many electrical components are shared with Volkswagen, Audi, and Skoda, which affects both parts availability and scrap value.
SEAT — Sociedad Espanola de Automoviles de Turismo — was founded in 1950 in Barcelona, Spain, initially as a joint venture with Fiat, which supplied technology and manufacturing know-how. Fiat’s involvement ended in 1982, and Volkswagen Group acquired a controlling stake in SEAT in 1986, completing full ownership in 1990. Since VW Group acquisition, SEAT has shared engine families (EA111, EA211, EA888), platforms (PQ25, MQB), and transmissions (DSG, MQ200) with Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, and from 2018, the new CUPRA performance brand. SEAT vehicles are assembled primarily at the Martorell plant near Barcelona, Catalonia — SEAT’s main production facility since 1993 and the only plant currently producing vehicles for mass-market sale in Spain. Martorell produces the Ibiza, Leon, Arona, and Formentor.

Why Do SEAT Owners Scrap Their Cars?

SEAT owners scrap their cars most often due to: EA111 1.2 TSI timing chain failure (40,000 to 60,000 miles — affects Ibiza, Leon, Altea from 2007-2013); EA111 1.4 TSI piston ring wear and oil consumption; DQ200 7-speed dry-clutch DSG transmission juddering and clutch pack failure; 1.6 TDI common rail diesel injector fouling from short-trip urban driving; and accumulated corrosion and electrical faults on high-mileage examples. The SEAT Ibiza accounts for 41% and the Leon for 33% of all scrapped SEATs (ScrapCarComparison).

EA111 vs EA211

The Critical Distinction for SEAT Ibiza and Leon Owners

In 2012-2013, Volkswagen Group replaced the EA111 engine family with the EA211 family across SEAT, VW, Skoda, and Audi. The EA211 addressed the EA111’s timing chain problems by switching to a timing belt — marketed by VAG as a ‘lifetime belt’ — which does not carry the catastrophic failure risk of a stretched timing chain. The EA211 is fitted to the Ibiza Mk5 (from 2017), Leon Mk3/4, Arona, and Ateca. EA211 engines use a 1.0 TSI (75 PS, 95 PS, 110 PS) or 1.5 TSI (130 PS, 150 PS) in most SEAT applications.

The distinction between EA111 and EA211 is the single most important engine family fact for a SEAT scrap page: an EA111-equipped SEAT (2007-approximately 2015 depending on model) carries a documented timing chain failure risk; an EA211-equipped SEAT (2013+ in most models) does not share this specific risk. EA211 engines do have their own pattern issues — timing belt wear after high mileage (belt inspection recommended at 100,000 miles), thermostat housing and water pump coolant seeps, direct injection carbon buildup on intake valves, and occasional turbo wastegate rattle. These are less severe than EA111 chain failure and rarely alone justify scrapping a vehicle.

DQ200 7-Speed Dry-Clutch DSG Transmission Juddering

The DQ200 is the Volkswagen Group’s 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) with dry clutch packs, fitted to SEAT models with smaller-displacement engines — primarily the 1.2 TSI, 1.4 TSI (lower output), and 1.0 TSI in the Ibiza, Leon, Arona, and Altea. The DQ200 dry clutch operates differently from the DQ250 wet-clutch DSG fitted to larger-engined VAG models: the dry clutch packs are not bathed in oil and operate with a different engagement profile, particularly at low speeds and in stop-start traffic. At low speed manoeuvring and on slow-speed inclines, the DQ200 can hesitate, lurch forward, or shudder as the clutch packs struggle to find their biting point. This is a known characteristic rather than a fault in low-mileage examples, but on higher-mileage DQ200 units the clutch pack wear becomes progressive and the juddering worsens significantly. A DQ200 mechatronic unit failure (the electro-hydraulic controller) costs GBP 800 to GBP 1,500 for replacement, and a full DQ200 rebuild or replacement can reach GBP 1,800 to GBP 3,500 depending on the extent of wear. Combined with an EA111 timing chain failure on the same vehicle, these costs almost always justify scrapping rather than repairing.

EA111 1.2 TSI Timing Chain Failure

40,000 to 60,000 Miles (Ibiza, Leon 2007-2013)

The EA111 engine family is the Volkswagen Group’s first-generation turbocharged small petrol engine. In SEAT application, the most commonly fitted EA111 units are the 1.2 TSI (75 PS, 85 PS, 105 PS) in the Ibiza Mk4, Leon Mk2, and Altea, and the 1.4 TSI (122 PS, 150 PS, 180 PS twincharged) in the Leon Mk2 and Ibiza FR. The EA111 uses a timing chain rather than a timing belt, and this chain is the primary documented failure point across the entire VAG group EA111 range.

The EA111 1.2 TSI chain stretches prematurely — commonly between 40,000 and 60,000 miles — due to inadequate chain tensioner design. The tensioner loses oil pressure on cold starts, allowing chain slack to develop. The original chain lengthens under this repeated load cycling. Volkswagen Group recognised this fault and issued repair kit part number 03F 198 229 A, which includes a reinforced timing chain (part number 03F 109 158 K) and an updated chain guide with anti-jump teeth (part number 03F 109 210 D). The anti-jump guide is specifically designed to prevent the chain from skipping teeth if the chain slackens suddenly — this prevents the pistons from striking open valves and destroying the engine. The repair kit addresses the risk of catastrophic failure but does not eliminate the cold-start rattle from the tensioner spring losing tension over time. An EA111 cold-start rattle that disappears within 30 seconds indicates tensioner wear — it does not yet indicate engine destruction risk, but the chain assembly should be inspected. If the rattle persists beyond 30 seconds, chain replacement should not be delayed.

The EA111 1.2 TSI repair kit (03F 198 229 A) costs approximately GBP 80 to GBP 150 in parts; labour at a specialist adds GBP 250 to GBP 450. On a high-mileage SEAT Ibiza or Leon where the EA111 chain has failed catastrophically — jumped teeth, bent valves, engine destroyed — the repair cost (GBP 1,500 to GBP 3,500 for engine replacement) will typically exceed the vehicle’s value, making scrap or salvage the correct decision.

1.6 TDI Common Rail Diesel

Injector Fouling and DPF Issues

The 1.6 TDI common rail diesel (fitted to the Leon Mk2/Mk3, Ibiza Mk4/Mk5, Altea, Arona, and Ateca) is shared across the VW Group — the same unit appears in the VW Golf, Skoda Octavia, and Audi A3. On SEAT models primarily driven on short urban trips, the 1.6 TDI is prone to diesel injector fouling from incomplete combustion cycles. Fouled injectors produce a rough idle, hesitation under acceleration, and increased fuel consumption. The DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) on the 1.6 TDI requires sustained higher-speed driving to complete regeneration — short trips cause DPF blockage, which in turn raises backpressure, impacts combustion quality, and accelerates injector fouling. A blocked DPF on a 1.6 TDI costs GBP 150 to GBP 400 to clean professionally or GBP 700 to GBP 1,400 for replacement. Injector replacement is GBP 250 to GBP 450 per injector. Four failed injectors plus a blocked DPF on an older SEAT Leon 1.6 TDI frequently makes the vehicle uneconomical to repair.

Should You Scrap Your SEAT or Sell It for Salvage?

Updated: February 2026

Scrap is the right choice when...

Salvage pays more when...

EA111 timing chain has jumped, pistons struck valves, engine destroyed -- rebuild GBP 1,500-3,500 exceeds vehicle value

EA111 cold-start rattle present but engine still running -- drivetrain worth more running

DQ200 DSG clutch pack failure combined with EA111 chain fault and body corrosion

DQ200 juddering only, engine sound -- isolated transmission fault

Category B write-off with structural damage throughout

Any CUPRA model (Formentor VZ, Leon CUPRA, Born) -- performance spec always commands salvage premium

1.6 TDI with multiple failed injectors + blocked DPF + high mileage body corrosion

Leon Mk3/4 with isolated fault -- strong salvage demand for part-interchange with VW/Skoda/Audi

Market Insight:

Scrap a SEAT when: EA111 timing chain has jumped and engine is destroyed; DQ200 DSG + EA111 chain failure combined exceed vehicle value; Category B write-off. Sell for salvage when: EA111 cold-start chain rattle only — engine still running; DQ200 juddering but drivetrain otherwise sound; any CUPRA model; any Leon CUPRA or Formentor VZ.

Scrap or Salvage?

Scrap a SEAT when the 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt has failed, the 1.6 TDCi timing belt has snapped, or the car is a Category B write-off. Sell for salvage when the engine runs and the fault is mechanical, electrical, or cosmetic. Focus ST and Mustang models should always be assessed for salvage.

SEAT Scrappage Scheme History and 2026 Status

The SEAT scrappage scheme ended on 31 December 2017 and has not been restarted. No SEAT scrappage scheme is active in 2026. The scheme offered discounts off new SEAT models when trading in an older vehicle but no SEAT-branded scheme has been offered since its end. SEAT did not offer electrification on its models until 2020 (Leon e-Hybrid plug-in hybrid), so no electric SEAT models were available during the scheme period.

Owners of older pre-Euro 4 petrol and pre-Euro 6 diesel SEATs — particularly the Ibiza Mk3, Ibiza Mk4 (pre-2011), and Leon Mk1/Mk2 diesel models — may be eligible for location-based clean air zone scrappage support in London (ULEZ), Birmingham (CAZ), or Scotland (LEZ). Check your vehicle’s emissions compliance at tfl.gov.uk/check-your-vehicle before applying.

London ULEZ Scrappage Scheme

pre-Euro 4 petrol and pre-Euro 6 diesel SEATs are non-ULEZ compliant. Eligible London residents can receive up to GBP 2,000. Most Ibiza Mk3 and older Leon Mk1 models are pre-Euro 4.

Get a guaranteed price using your reg and postcode.

What is the EA111 timing chain fault on a SEAT Ibiza or Leon?

The EA111 is the Volkswagen Group's first-generation turbocharged small petrol engine family, fitted to the SEAT Ibiza Mk4, Leon Mk2, and Altea with 1.2 TSI and 1.4 TSI units from approximately 2007 to 2013. The EA111's timing chain stretches prematurely -- commonly between 40,000 and 60,000 miles -- because the tensioner loses oil pressure on cold starts, allowing repeated chain slack. VW Group issued repair kit part number 03F 198 229 A with a reinforced chain and an anti-jump guide to prevent the chain from skipping teeth and destroying the engine. A cold-start rattle that disappears within 30 seconds on an EA111 engine indicates tensioner wear and should be inspected. A rattle persisting beyond 30 seconds requires immediate chain replacement. If the chain has already jumped and the engine is destroyed, the repair cost (GBP 1,500 to GBP 3,500) usually exceeds the vehicle's value.

What is the difference between EA111 and EA211 on a SEAT?

The EA111 is the older Volkswagen Group small petrol engine family (fitted to SEAT Ibiza Mk4, Leon Mk2, Altea -- approximately 2007 to 2013/2015) and uses a timing chain with a known stretching fault. The EA211 is the replacement engine family (fitted to Ibiza Mk5, Leon Mk3/4, Arona, Ateca -- from 2013 onwards) and uses a timing belt marketed as a 'lifetime belt', which does not carry the EA111's catastrophic chain failure risk. The EA111 to EA211 switch is the most important reliability distinction when evaluating any SEAT Ibiza or Leon for scrap. An EA211-engined SEAT does not share the EA111 timing chain fault.

What is the DQ200 DSG fault on a SEAT?

The DQ200 is Volkswagen Group's 7-speed dry-clutch DSG automatic gearbox, fitted to SEAT models with smaller engines -- primarily 1.0 TSI, 1.2 TSI, and lower-output 1.4 TSI units in the Ibiza, Leon, Arona, and Altea. Unlike the DQ250 wet-clutch DSG fitted to larger-engined SEAT models, the DQ200 uses dry clutch packs that are not bathed in oil. At low speeds, in stop-start traffic, and on gentle inclines, the dry clutch can hesitate, lurch, or judder as the biting point engagement is managed electronically. On high-mileage DQ200 units the clutch pack wear is progressive and the shuddering worsens over time. DQ200 mechatronic unit failure costs GBP 800 to GBP 1,500; a full DQ200 rebuild or replacement is GBP 1,800 to GBP 3,500.

Is there a SEAT scrappage scheme in 2026?

No. The SEAT scrappage scheme ended on 31 December 2017 and has not been restarted. No SEAT-branded scrappage scheme is active in 2026. Owners of pre-Euro 4 petrol or pre-Euro 6 diesel SEATs may be eligible for location-based clean air zone scrappage schemes in London (ULEZ), Birmingham (CAZ), and Scotland (LEZ). Check your vehicle's emissions compliance at tfl.gov.uk/check-your-vehicle.

Where are SEATs made?

SEAT vehicles are assembled primarily at the Martorell plant near Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain -- SEAT's main production facility since 1993 and the only plant currently producing cars for mass-market sale in Spain. Martorell produces the Ibiza, Leon, Arona, and CUPRA Formentor. SEAT was founded in 1950 in Barcelona as Sociedad Espanola de Automoviles de Turismo, initially in a technology joint venture with Fiat. Volkswagen Group acquired SEAT in 1986 and completed full ownership in 1990. The CUPRA Born EV is assembled at the VW Group Zwickau plant in Germany (the same plant as the VW ID.3 and Audi Q4 e-tron) using the VW MEB electric platform.

Can I scrap a SEAT Leon CUPRA or CUPRA Formentor?

Technically yes, but CUPRA performance models are almost always worth considerably more for salvage than scrap weight. The Leon CUPRA (245 PS to 300 PS), CUPRA Formentor VZ (310 PS, 4Drive AWD), and CUPRA Born (performance EV) carry enhanced drivetrain components -- Brembo brake callipers, limited-slip differential (Formentor VZ), and uprated suspension -- that have strong secondary market demand. CUPRA was established as a separate brand from SEAT in 2018. Always get a salvage price alongside scrap before accepting any offer on a CUPRA model. The CUPRA Born is an EV and requires an EV-certified ATF for 400V high-voltage battery safe discharge.
