The Service

Get the Best Price for Your Scrap or Salvage Vehicle

Selling your car for scrap or salvage means getting paid for your unwanted, damaged, or end-of-life vehicle by a licensed buyer who will either recycle it for its metal value or dismantle it for reusable parts. At Scrap a Vehicle, we compare both scrap and salvage offers to make sure you walk away with the highest possible price – with free collection from anywhere in the UK and same-day payment by bank transfer.
Not every car that’s reached the end of the road belongs in the crusher. Some are worth more taken apart and sold as parts. Others might still have life in them as a salvage project. We look at all the options and tell you which one puts the most money in your pocket.

Should I Sell My Car or Scrap It?

This is the question most people get stuck on, and the answer depends on three things: the condition of your car, how much time you’re willing to invest, and what the car is actually worth on today’s market.
Here’s a rough guide to help you decide:

Scrap it

if the car is very old, heavily damaged, failed its MOT on major items, or the repair bill is more than the car’s value. At this point, you’re selling metal and materials. You’ll get a price based on weight, catalytic converter value, and current scrap metal rates. Quick, clean, done.

Sell it for salvage

if the car has parts in decent condition – a working engine, gearbox, good body panels, alloy wheels, or a low-mileage interior. Salvage buyers pay more because they can sell those components individually, which are often worth more than the raw metal. A car that fetches £200 as scrap might get £350-£500 as salvage.

Sell it privately

if the car still runs, has a valid MOT, and is in reasonable condition. You’ll almost always get more money selling privately through AutoTrader, Facebook Marketplace, or Gumtree. But it takes time, effort, and you’ll deal with tyre-kickers, no-shows, and lowball offers. If you’ve got patience, it’s the better financial option. If you haven’t, we’re here.

Sell it to a car buying service

(like webuyanycar) if it’s in running condition and you want speed over price. These services offer less than private sale but more than scrap. You’ll need to drive the car to a branch, though, which rules it out if the vehicle isn’t roadworthy.

Not sure which category your car falls into? Get a quote from us. We’ll assess whether it’s worth more as scrap or salvage and give you the best available option.

What Documents Do I Need to Sell My Car?

Selling your car for scrap or salvage requires less paperwork than you’d think. Here’s what you’ll need on collection day:

V5C registration document (logbook)

this is the big one. Section 9 of the V5C gets signed and handed to the collection driver. It’s how the DVLA tracks that the vehicle has changed hands. If you’ve lost your V5C, you can still sell your car – check our guide on selling without a V5 for alternative options.

Photo ID

a valid driving licence or passport. This is a legal requirement under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013. Every legitimate buyer must verify your identity before purchasing a vehicle. No exceptions.

Proof of address

a utility bill or bank statement showing your current address. Some buyers require this alongside your photo ID, particularly if your V5C address doesn’t match your current one.

All vehicle keys

hand over whatever keys you’ve got. If you’ve lost them, let us know when you book – it’s not a deal-breaker, but it helps the collection run smoothly.

That’s it. No MOT certificate needed. No service history. No V5C/3 slip. We keep it simple because, honestly, scrapping a car shouldn’t involve a filing cabinet’s worth of paperwork.

How Can I Get the Best Price When Selling My Car?

A few small things can make a real difference to what you’re offered:

Don’t strip parts yourself

it seems logical to remove valuable bits and sell them separately, but buyers price the car as a whole. A car missing its catalytic converter, wheels, or engine is worth significantly less because the salvage value drops. Unless you know exactly what you’re doing, leave it intact.

Have your V5C ready

cars with paperwork in order are easier to process, which means buyers can offer slightly more. A missing V5C doesn’t prevent the sale, but it does add friction.

Be honest about condition

the quote you receive is based on what you tell us. If the car’s condition is worse than described, the price may be adjusted on collection. Accurate information upfront means no surprises for either side.

Keep the catalytic converter attached

the cat is often the single most valuable component. It contains platinum, palladium, and rhodium – precious metals worth serious money. A car with its cat intact will always fetch more than one without it.

Check whether it’s worth more as salvage

if your car has a working engine, decent bodywork, or parts in demand, salvage buyers may pay considerably more than the base scrap value. We check both routes automatically and give you whichever is higher.

Time it with the market

scrap metal prices fluctuate. Steel and copper values shift daily, and they directly affect what your car is worth. Our quotes reflect live market rates, so you’re always getting the current price. Check our scrap car prices guide for the latest market trends.

The single best thing you can do? Get multiple quotes. Or better yet, use a comparison service like ours that does it for you.

Can I Sell My Car If It’s Still on Finance?

Not until the finance is fully settled. With hire purchase (HP), PCP, and lease agreements, the finance company legally owns the vehicle until the final payment clears. You can’t sell something you don’t own – that’s the straightforward bit.
Here’s what to do if you’re in this situation:

Contact your finance provider

Ask for a settlement figure. This is the total amount needed to pay off the agreement early. It’ll include any early repayment fees.

Pay off the balance

Once you’ve settled the finance and received written confirmation that the agreement is closed, you’re the legal owner.

Then sell or scrap as normal

Get a quote from us, book collection, and get paid. If the car’s worth less than the outstanding finance, you’ll need to cover the difference out of pocket.

The one exception: if you took out a personal loan that isn’t secured against the car, then technically you already own it. But that’s fairly rare. If you’re unsure, check your agreement or call your lender.

What Cars Will You Buy?

All of them. Seriously. We’re not fussy. If you’ve got a vehicle you want to sell – whether it’s technically scrap, salvageable, or just unwanted – we’ll make you an offer.
That includes:

Cars with no MOT

failed, expired, or never had one. Doesn’t matter to us

High-mileage cars

clocked 150K, 200K, 300K miles? We’ll still buy it

SORN’d vehicles

off-road, no tax, no insurance – fine by us

Cars without a V5C

lost the logbook? We can work with that

Non-runners

dead battery, seized engine, won’t turn over. Our team collects non-runners every day

Accident-damaged vehicles

Cat B, Cat S, Cat N write-offs, or just cosmetically bashed up

Vans and commercial vehicles

we buy vans of every size and condition

Older and classic cars

even vintage vehicles have value, whether as parts or restorations

The only requirement is that you’re the legal owner. We’ll buy everything else.

What Happens After I Sell My Car?

Once we’ve collected your vehicle, a few things happen behind the scenes:

Your car is processed at a licensed ATF

If it’s being scrapped, it’s depolluted first – all hazardous fluids removed – then crushed and recycled. If it’s going to a salvage buyer, it’s carefully dismantled and the usable parts are tested and sold. Either way, it’s handled by an Authorised Treatment Facility that’s registered with the Environment Agency.

You receive a Certificate of Destruction

This is your legal proof that the car was processed through a licensed facility. Keep it safe. It protects you from any future claims or fines connected to the vehicle.

The DVLA is notified

We handle this on your behalf using Section 9 of your V5C. Your vehicle is deregistered and you’re no longer liable for it – no more tax, insurance, or SORN obligations.

Your road tax refund arrives

If the car was taxed, the DVLA will automatically refund any full remaining months. The refund typically arrives within 4–6 weeks.

For the full story on what happens to scrapped vehicles, check our ELV recycling page and sustainability page.

How fast can I sell my car for scrap?

In most cases, within 24 to 48 hours. Get your quote online, accept it, and we’ll arrange same-day or next-day collection. Payment is made by bank transfer on the day we collect.

Do I need an MOT to sell my car?

No. Your car doesn’t need a valid MOT for us to buy it. We collect MOT failures, expired MOTs, and cars that have never been tested. Since we bring a recovery vehicle, your car doesn’t go on the road under its own power.

Will I get more if my car has low mileage?

Potentially, yes. Low-mileage cars tend to have more valuable parts – engines, gearboxes, and suspension components that salvage buyers can resell. We factor this into your quote automatically.

Can I sell a car that’s been written off by my insurer?

Yes, as long as you’re the legal owner. If your insurer has already paid out and taken ownership, they’ll handle disposal. But if you kept the car after a Cat S or Cat N write-off, you’re free to sell it to us.

What if my car is worth more than scrap value?

Then we’ll tell you. Our quoting system checks both scrap and salvage markets. If your car has parts worth more than its metal weight, the salvage route will pay better – and we’ll automatically give you the higher offer.

How do you decide whether my car is scrap or salvage?

It comes down to the parts. If the engine, gearbox, body panels, or other major components are in working condition and there’s market demand for them, your car has salvage value. If not, it goes through as scrap based on metal weight and catalytic converter content.

Is selling my car to a scrap service safe?

Completely – as long as you use a licensed service. We only work with Authorised Treatment Facilities registered with the Environment Agency. You get a Certificate of Destruction, DVLA notification, and a traceable bank transfer. That’s the legal, safe way to sell a scrap car.

Can I sell just the parts and keep the shell?

Technically yes, but we wouldn’t recommend it. Selling parts individually takes time, mechanical knowledge, and storage space. Plus, a stripped shell is worth very little to scrap yards. In most cases, selling the whole car as salvage through us gets you a better total price with zero hassle.
