How Much Can I Scrap My Car for in the Western Isles?
Western Isles scrap car prices are based on the same criteria as the mainland – weight, catalytic converter, and salvage potential. Ferry costs are absorbed by us. The extreme salt corrosion means vehicles here often have lower salvage value but competitive scrap metal prices based on weight.
A small hatchback typically returns £75–£185 for scrap or £150–£380 if salvaged. Mid-size cars sit at £115–£275 scrap or £205–£575 salvage. Larger saloons fetch £150–£355 scrap or up to £810 salvage. SUVs range from £185–£455 scrap, and big 4x4s can hit £250–£540 scrap or up to £1,560 salvage. Vans start at £210 scrap.
Why the range? Three factors: catalytic converter condition, salvageable parts, and current scrap metal market rate.
In the Western Isles specifically, extreme Atlantic corrosion means fewer salvageable parts but strong scrap metal weight. Crofting 4x4s return the best values due to heavy weight. Our free ferry logistics remove the traditional £200+ barrier that made island scrappage uneconomical.

What Are the Most Commonly Scrapped Cars in the Western Isles?
The Western Isles’ scrap car profile is defined by one factor above all others: Atlantic salt corrosion. Every vehicle here dies from rust. The most commonly scrapped makes are:
Hilux and Land Cruiser. The Hilux is the crofter’s workhorse alongside the Defender. Even Toyota’s legendary reliability can’t beat the Western Isles’ salt. These vehicles reach end of life on corrosion rather than mechanical failure, often with relatively low mileages for their age.
Corsas and Astras serve as town cars in Stornoway and the larger settlements. Atlantic salt destroys bodywork within 5–7 years – half the lifespan of an equivalent mainland vehicle. Structural corrosion rather than mechanical failure is the universal trigger.
Ranger pickups, Transit vans, and Fiestas. The Ranger serves crofting. Transits from the fishing and trades sectors face the same extreme corrosion. Smaller Fords die from floor pan and sill rot that makes them unsafe.
L200 and Shogun. Island crofters use the L200 as a Hilux alternative. Terminal corrosion from Atlantic salt is the overwhelming trigger. No vehicle survives the Western Isles’ environment for more than about 12 years without major structural compromise.
Navara and Qashqai. The Navara serves island farmers. The Qashqai is the most popular non-4×4 crossover. DPF issues on 1.5 and 2.5 dCi engines are secondary triggers, but Atlantic salt corrosion always gets there first.

- Scrap My Car Western Isles – Frequently Asked Questions
How does Western Isles scrap car collection work?
We collect your car on-island, arrange CalMac ferry transport to the mainland, and process it at a licensed ATF. All ferry costs and logistics are handled by us.
How long does it take?
Advance booking required. Once booked, we coordinate with CalMac for the next available sailing. Typically 5–14 working days from booking to processing, depending on weather and ferry availability.
Do I pay for the CalMac ferry?
No. All ferry costs are absorbed by us. Your quote is your price – no deductions.
What about Sunday collection on Lewis?
We respect the Sabbath observance on Lewis. Collections on Lewis are scheduled Monday to Saturday only. Other islands are available seven days.
Can you collect from Barra, Uist and the smaller islands?
Yes. Barra, South Uist, Benbecula, North Uist – all covered. We coordinate inter-island and mainland ferry connections.
What about abandoned cars on croft land?
If you own the vehicle and have the V5C, we can collect it regardless of condition or location. This includes vehicles that have been sitting on croft land for years. It’s better to scrap properly than leave it – abandonment is illegal.
What happens after collection?
CalMac ferry to mainland, then licensed ATF depollution, parts recovery, 95%+ recycling. CoD issued and DVLA notified.
Is there a minimum value?
No minimum. Even if a car is only worth the base scrap metal price, we still collect and handle all ferry logistics at no charge.
