Fix it or sell it? Do the sum before the garage does it for you.

A garage quotes the repair. It doesn’t tell you what the car is worth fixed, or what it’s worth right now, broken. You need all three numbers to decide, and two of them are a reg check away. Not sure exactly what it failed on? Check the MOT history free to see every failure and advisory, with used parts to fix each one.

Rule of thumb: if the repair bill is more than half of what the car would fetch once fixed, you are paying to own the same old car. Sell it as it is and put the money towards the next one.

And if it’s only a bulb, a tyre or a wiper blade, fix it and keep driving. We’ll tell you that too.

Worked example · 2014 Vauxhall Astra 1.6, 98k
Failed on: brake pipes, two springs, exhaustGarage repair quote£1,340Worth once repaired (private sale)£2,100Our price, as it sits in the garage£425
Repair and sell: £2,100 − £1,340 = £760, after a week without a car, the bill up front and a private sale to run. Sell to us today: £425, collected from the garage.

MOT failure: what it failed on changes what it's worth

We price the parts that survive, not the weight. So a car that failed on something that doesn’t touch the engine, gearbox or body is still worth proper money to our buyers.

Salvage money
Emissions, DPF, catalytic converter
Expensive to put right, often £1,000+. But the rest of the car is fine, and the cat itself has real value. One of the best cars to sell as it is.
Salvage money
Engine or gearbox fault, warning lights
Repair is usually more than the car is worth. Doors, lights, seats, suspension and electrics are all still sellable parts, so the price stays well above scrap.
Salvage money
Airbag, ABS or steering faults
Dangerous-category fails that stop you driving it, but they don't stop the car being worth something. We collect, so the “can't move it” problem is ours.
Usually scrap money
Corrosion, sills, subframe, structural rust
Welding is dear and the shell has no resale value. We still price the engine, gearbox, cat and alloys, so it's rarely just weight.
Depends on the car
Brakes, springs, bushes, exhaust
Each one is cheap. Four of them on a 12-year-old car isn't. Add the repair quote to the reg check and we'll show both prices.
Honestly? Fix it
Bulbs, tyres, wipers, washer fluid
Under £150 to put right. Keep the car. Need a part for it? Our buyers' sellers list tested used parts at partpro.co.uk. If you still want rid of it, use the sell my car route, where a running, tested car fetches more.
Broken down and want to fix it?

The sum works out in favour of repairing? Get the parts from the cars our buyers have already bought.

Every car our buyers take in is stripped and the good parts go on sale through their sellers at partpro.co.uk. Engines, gearboxes, alternators, lights, doors, mirrors: tested, pictured, with the donor car’s reg, usually a third of the price of new. Search by your own reg and only parts that fit come up.

Alternator · 2014 Astra 1.6
£58 used · £210 new
Front spring pair · 2014 Astra
£34 used · £95 new

Can I still drive it? What happens now?

If the old MOT hasn’t expired yet and the failure wasn’t marked dangerous, you can drive it until the certificate runs out. If it has expired, or any item is dangerous, the only legal trips are to a pre-booked MOT or to a garage for repair, and your insurer may not cover you.

You don’t need a valid MOT to sell it to us, and you don’t need to SORN it first. We collect it on a recovery truck from wherever it is: your drive, the test centre, the garage that quoted you. The garage usually won’t charge storage if we’re collecting within a couple of days.

Old MOT still valid, failure not dangerous
Drive it home. Decide this week.
MOT expired, or a dangerous fail
Leave it where it is. We collect.
Broken down, never got to the test
Same price, same collection.

MOT failure or breakdown: how it works when the car can't move

STEP 1
Reg + what it failed on
Tick the boxes or paste the fail sheet. Price appears instantly.
STEP 2
Tell us where it is
Home, work, or the garage. We'll ring them to arrange the handover if you'd rather not.
STEP 3
Recovery truck collects
Winched on if it won't start. Driver checks it matches what you said, signs the paperwork.
STEP 4
Paid, DVLA told
Same-day payment by bank transfer, roadside if you prefer. We notify the DVLA and your road tax refund follows automatically.

MOT failure questions

Does a failed MOT lower the price?
Only by what the MOT failure was. A DPF fail on a 2016 car is still a 2016 car to a dismantler. Rust is the one that really costs you.
Can you collect it from the MOT garage?
Yes, that's the most common pickup. Give us the garage's name and we'll sort the handover with them.
Do I have to SORN it or tax it to sell?
No. We notify the DVLA when we take it and any unused tax is refunded to you.
It's been sat on the drive for months. Still worth something?
Yes. Flat battery and seized brakes don't change the parts value. Tell us so the driver brings the right kit.
What if I've already paid for part of the repair?
Tell us what's been done. New parts on the car count in your favour; we price what's on it, not what the fail sheet said.
I'd rather fix it. Can you help with that?
Yes. The parts from the cars our buyers take in are sold by their sellers at partpro.co.uk, searchable by your reg. Used, tested, a fraction of the dealer price.
Scrap or salvage, which is mine?
The reg check decides, and if it's borderline we show both numbers. Here's how we tell them apart.

Don't pay to fix a car you're done with.
